How to use Golden Ratio in Graphic Design
What is the Golden Ratio?
When a line is divided into two parts and the long part (a) is divided, there is a golden ratio also known as the Golden Section, Golden Mean, Divine Proportion or Greek letter Phi). Is equal to (a) + (b) divided by (b) (a) + (b) (a) by the smallest area, both of which are equal to 1.618.
But don’t let all the math get you down. In design, Golden Ratio boils down to aesthetics – creating and appreciating the sense of beauty through harmony and proportion. When applied to design, the Golden Ratio offers artistry; An X factor; A specific je ne sais quoi.
This harmony and proportion has been recognized for thousands of centuries: from the pyramids in Giza to the Parthenon in Athens; From Michelangelo’s The Creation of Adam to Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel; And from the Pepsi logo to the Twitter logo. Our bodies and faces follow a mathematical ratio:
In fact, our brains are hard-pressed to like objects and images that use the Golden Ratio. It’s almost a subtle attraction and even small changes that truly change an image to a golden ratio have a big impact on our brain.
The golden ratio can also be applied to shapes. Take a square and multiply one page by 1.618 and you get a rectangle of compatible ratio:
Now, if you place the square on top of the rectangle both shapes will give you the gold ratio:
If you continue to apply the Golden Ratio formula to the new rectangle to the right of the image above, you will gradually get this map with smaller squares:

If you take our Golden Ratio chart above and draw a curve from one corner to the opposite corner in each square, you will draw the first curve of the Golden Spiral (or Fibonacci sequence) – the shape of each of which is the sum of the previous two numbers. Starting from zero, the order is: 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144 and so on.
By adding a curve to each square, you end up with a map of the Golden Spiral:

Now, go one step further and find a circle in each square – then you will have circles that are in equilibrium with each other following the ratio of 1: 1.618.
So now squares, rectangles, and circles all follow the gold ratio and spray magic (number) on your design.
